Come and See

The Grand Canyon’s beauty and grandeur cannot be simply spoken by mere words or written paragraphs. We could spend countless hours attempting to describe the canyon’s depth, colors, and awe-inspiring sights, but all of this is futile for those who have never stood on the rim of the canyon. No words can truly convey the scale of God’s handiwork and all of His intricacies woven throughout the Grand Canyon. If you want to see the Canyon, then you must go to the canyon. This is an elementary truth, but one that resonates beyond a canyon, mountain range, geyser basin, or even waves crashing along a shoreline. We must answer the invitation: “Come and see.”

An invitation doesn’t have to be an elaborate gimmick; it’s simply a straightforward appeal to come and see. When Jesus asked His earliest disciples, “What do you seek?” they responded, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” To which He replied, “Come, and you will see” (John 1:38-39). The following day, when Philip went to retrieve Nathanael, his final appeal to Nathanael was, “Come and see” (John 1:46). This may seem simple, but it’s the most basic form of inviting others to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). When we genuinely embrace this gospel, we find no need for any other gimmick. We trust in God, the source of growth (1 Corinthians 3:8), who opens doors (Colossians 4:3-4), and who blesses us with the wisdom to make the most of our time on Earth (Ephesians 5:15-16). Our invitation to our neighbors, co-workers, and friends is not a deceptive tactic, but rather an appeal to the simplicity of the gospel.

When we witness a person obey the gospel, it is a sight that surpasses all others. The acknowledgment of sin is a sobering experience for all who obey the gospel. The weight of sin falls heavily upon our hearts, but thankfully, God has provided us with victory through Jesus! The good confession serves as a constant reminder to all that Jesus is the Son of God and reigns as the King of kings. The baptism of an obedient heart cannot be adequately described by mere words or written paragraphs. It is a sight that will never grow old!

This entire process begins with an invitation: “Come and see.” The most important thing we will ever accomplish in our lives is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world. The gospel not only transforms lives on earth but also changes our eternal destination! Will I be more like Philip and call others to “come and see”? Will I be eager to teach the gospel to others? Will I be enthusiastic in my own and others’ obedience to the gospel? The gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. We must diligently guard our hearts from allowing this to become stale, but rather, let us be renewed in zeal whenever we witness another heart saved by the grace of God!
